REQUIRED CLASS MATERIAL:
Class Notes & Textbook: Calculus using Mathematica
Supplement textbooks: other Calculus textbooks

PREREQUISITES: up-to-date knowledge of Algebra & Trigonometry .
Willingness to work hard, to spend at least 2 hours daily on this course outside class, & to think analytically.

MATERIAL COVERED:

Section 1. Big Picture of Calculus.
Basic concepts of Calculus; some motivational applications; a taste of definite integration, differentiation, and anti-differentiation.

Section 2. Limits & Continuity.
Intuitive notion of limits; properties of limits; three important limits; intuitive notion of continuity; continuous functions; some properties of continuous functions.

Section 3. Differentiation.
Definition of the derivative; derivatives of some basic functions; rules of derivatives; the Chain Rule; implicit differentiation; derivatives of inverse and parametric functions; higher order derivatives; partial derivatives; the (infamous) Mean-Value Theorem.

Section 4. Integrals & Antiderivatives.
Definition of the definite integral; Riemann Sum; the definite integrals of continuous functions; properties of definite integrals; antiderivatives and their properties; the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus; numerical integration. (If time permits...... differentiation of complex-valued functions; differentiation operator).

GRADING:

1. Two exams - 100 points each. 200 points

2. Final exam (see UMM bulletin) 150 points

3. Passing proficiency test on algebra and trigonometry - 10 points

4. Quizzes (computer & written) - approximately once a week. 70 points

5. Homework (computer & written) - assigned almost daily. 70 points

No late homework will be accepted and NO make-up exams & quizzes will be given, unless arrangements are made with the instructor prior to the date of exams (quizzes) or the due date of the homework.
