Hi Everyone,

I want to remind you that the Student Center will be open until 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday night for your sections to setup their areas for Jamboree. Also, Oyate Hall will be locked at 9:30 p.m. so you and your students don't need to worry about theft or vandelism during the night. The Student Center will be open at 7:00 a.m. on Thursday morning if your sections need to finish up. I will be there at 7:00 a.m. if anyone needs anything then.

If you can, please make time to attend the Latterell  Lecture at 5:30 pm in the Science Auditorium. Please note that Dr. Kirsten Jaglo is at the pulse of climate change, since her occupation involves her in the development of US climate change policy.

The Maya article is due tomorrow.

The documents section and the calendar have been updated.

On Thursday, Dr. Keith Brugger will talk to us about the interpretation of climatic data from the geological record.

Please note the following opportunity:

On behalf of the UMM Biology Discipline, I cordially invite you and your students to attend the 2nd Annual Laterell Lecture, for which we proudly welcome returning alumna, Dr. Kirsten Jaglo, Ph.D.

During her lecture on October 23, at 5:30 p.m. in the Science Auditorium,  Kirsten will share insights with us informed by her unique career path in plant molecular biology and U.S. international climate change policy.

Kirsten received her B.A. in Biology from UMM in 1994, and her Ph.D. in Crop and Soil Science, Plant Breeding and Genetics from Michigan State University in 2000, where she specialized in abiotic plant stress.  She held a Post-doctoral Fellowship in the Dept. of Biochemistry and Biophysics and Howard Hughes Medical Institute from 2000-2005, and is currently a AAAS Diplomacy Fellow in the Office of Global Change at the U.S. State Department.  Additionally, she holds four U.S. patents and has a wealth of international experience.

I would say this is an excellent opportunity for some extra credit:  Half-to-one page reflection for 15 points.
