CSci 1001 Problem set 1. Due Thursday, September 25 at 2pm.
Written problems (12 points)
- Exercises 11, 16, 17 p. 17
- Consider the following 3 files:
- A paper in Microsoft Word format, 100KB
- A JPEG image, 800KB
- A music file, 10MB
For each of the files please answer the following four questions:
- How many files of this type can be stored in 4GB RAM?
- How many files of this type can be stored on a 512MB flash drive?
- How many packets will be used to transmit each of the files over a network with a maximal packet size of 1,500 bytes?
XHTML (12 points)
Construct a web page about yourself or anything that interests
you. Do not set any fonts, colors, etc. - you will format your page
using CSS. Write your source code in a plain-text editor, such as
NotePad. Upload your file to the XHTML validator, your page must be
XHTML-compliant.
Your page must have the following:
- A meaningful title
- At least two different-sized headers
- At least one list (of any kind)
- At least three links
- At least one image
- At least one table (do not use tables for formatting)
CSS (12 points)
- Use an external CSS file, do not use the style attributes or
embedded CSS
- Set a background color or an image for your page
- Set the text properties (font, color) for the page
- Set at least one property of a header
- Set the border property of an image or a table
- Make links show up differently when the have been visited or when
the mouse moves over them.
- Set a property for at least one group of tags (separated by
commas)
- Set a property for at least one tag that appears nested within
another tag.
How to submit
Web pages:
If you wish to use your account on cda, you may upload your web page,
the CSS file, and the images there and send me the URL by e-mail. In
this case do not change the files after the due date.
If you are not using your cda account, just send me all the files
(including images) by e-mail.
Word problems:
Either submit them at the beginning of the class (printed or
hand-written) or send them with your problem set by e-mail. Please
send only one e-mail with your entire problem set.
