CSci 1301: Lab 3

The lab is done in groups of 2 or 3. In the beginning of each file please write (in comments) the names fo all group members.

What to submit

At the end of the lab please send me and your group partner(s) all your Racket files as e-mail attachments. My e-mail is elenam at morris.umn.edu. The subject of your e-mail must be "1301 Lab 2" followed by "Final" or "Not final", depending on whether this is a final submission or you are still working on it. If you need to finish it, make sure to set up a time with your group partner(s) to finish the lab.

When to submit

Due Monday, September 27th, at 11:59pm. If you submit the final version during the lab, you are done.

Problem 1 (and only): 25 points.

Based on exercises at the end of Section 6.6, write a program for a simple cartoon that moves a picture constructed of geometric shapes. Please follow these requirements:

• Use no less than 5 simple shapes (lines, circles, rectangles) and no more than 12. This means that no more than 12 simple shapes may appear on the canvas at any one time.
• Use at least one structure to define a shape (e.g. a circle, a rectangle, a smiley face, ...). Note that you have to define these structures yourself, they are not a part of Scheme. You can use a smaller structure as a part of a larger one (for instance, a posn structure would be a part of your own circle structure).
• You will need to use the posn structure that is already defined.
• Use the drawing and clearing functions given in Section 6.2, also see the ring example. You may combine "draw" and "clear" functions into "move", "shrink", "jump" functions, or whatever else your shapes are doing.
• Use a function sleep-for-a-while to control movements
• Use no less than 5 moves and no more than 15.
• Use "helper" functions for drawing sub-parts of your pictures. Long sequences of code will not be acceptable.
• You may use randomness to set a position of a shape: random. For instance, (random 300) gives you a random integer in the range from 0 to 299. Note that these numbers will be different every time you run your program.
• Your Scheme code must be clear. Use meaningful names for variables and functions, write comments to clarify your program.
• Three most creative cartoons (as judged by other students) will get extra credit. Non-explosive cartoons are encouraged.

Note that cartoons that exceed the number of shapes or moves will be disqualified from the competition. If in doubt, please check before submitting.
