Community Outreach Points (COPs)
This
class is about isolation/marginalization and community. In pursuit of a theme
of community, you will be asked to participate in several community-building
activities. You will document your
activities by writing a brief but detailed summary on an index card or sheet of
paper and handing it in to the instructor the first class period after the
activity. The activities are described
below:
- Each class member is required
to sign up to facilitate one community-building exercise in our class (10
pts)
- Community scavenger
hunt (10 pts)
- Attend a meeting of a
student organization—can be done more than once (5 pts.)
- Attend an event on
campus—a lecture, concert, etc.—can be done more than once (5 pts.)
- Attend a second meeting
of the same organization and participate (10 pts.)
- Run for office, work on
an event, or otherwise participate deeply in a student organization (15
pts.)
- Write a letter or
editorial for the university or community paper or respond to someone
else’s letter/editorial (10 pts.)
- Gather information
about taking on a campus leadership role in your future years at UMM—for
example, how to be an RA, an orientation group leader, etc. (10 pts.)
