NOT just feeling good about self
“The experience of being capable of meeting life’s challenges and being worthy of happiness” (NASE)
Arguments
Just feeling good about self without foundation (pseudo-self esteem) leads to egotism, arrogance, conceit, narcissism, a sense of superiority, even violence
Low self esteem:
Focus on trying to prove themselves or impress others
Use others for their own gain
Lack confidence in themselves
Have doubts about their worth and acceptability
Reluctant to take risks or expose themselves to failure
Blame others for their shortcomings rather than take responsibility
Problems associated with low self-esteem
Violence
Alcoholism
Drug abuse
Eating disorder
School dropout
Teen pregnancy
Suicide
Low academic achievement
